Mino Raiola news: Football super-agent dies aged 54

The Italian was one of the biggest football agents  in the world, with clients including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland.

Football agent Mino Raiola has passed away at the age of 54, on Saturday, confirmed his family on social media. The Italian was one of the biggest football agents  in the world, with clients including AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. Raiola was admitted to San Raffaele hospital on January 12 and underwent very delicate surgery but the nature of the illness was not revealed.  Reports at the time suggested the condition wasn’t life-threatening and that Raiola would begin a period of Rehabilitation at home. The Italian started with humble beginnings, working in a pizza restaurant to become one of the most influential figures in world football.

Pogba’s the-world record move to Man United

His career as an agent started in the eighties, brokering Dennis Bergkamp’s move from Ajax to Inter Milan in the summer of 1993. He was involved in Robinho’s historic move from Real Madrid to Manchester City, the first transfer of the Sheikh Mansour era. He also played a big role in Pogba’s big-money move from Juventus to Manchester United in 2016. The Frenchman’s return to Old Trafford for a then-world record of GBP 83.9 million. It was reported that Raiola earned as much as GBP 20 million for Pogba’s move. His involvement in several big-money moves helped him amass a significant personal fortune. 

Has an estimated personal wealth of GBP 62 million

Forbes estimated last year that the Italian’s personal wealth was in the region of GBP 62 million. With the summer transfer window approaching in a few months, Raiola was expected to play a big role as transfer rumours involving Haaland and Pogba were making the rounds. He was born in Italy, but moved to the Netherlands as a child with his family. During the 1990’s, he worked for the Sports Promotions, a company in Holland, and assisted with the transfers of several high-profile Dutch players, including Bergkamp, to Italian clubs.

The Italian learned from his colleagues how to conduct such transfers by himself, making extra photocopies of vital documents, before striking out to negotiate the move of Czech star Pavel Nedvěd from Sparta Prague to Lazio in 1996. The midfielder then went on to become a Juventus legend after switching to the Old Lady in 2001. Since then he has overseen numerous Ibrahimovic transfers around Europe, as well as Balotelli’s move from Inter Milan to Man City in 2019 and his subsequent switch to AC Milan in 2013.
