AC Milan forward Rafael Leao admits “Coppa Italia is a competition” they “want to win” after the 4-0 thrashing of Lazio in the quarter final fixture at San Siro on Wednesday. The Portuguese footballer scored the opening goal and set up the second for Olivier Giroud to tap-in from close range. Giroud completed his brace on the stroke of half-time before Franck Kessie completed the drubbing with Milan’s fourth of the night, eleven minutes from time. The Rossoneri will face Inter Milan in the two-legged semifinal, only round which will be played over two legs.

“After the derby, a very important game for us, we arrived for tonight fired up and I thought we had an extraordinary performance. It was the right result,” Leao told Sport Mediaset just days after beating Inter 2-1 in Serie A.

“Now we’re in the semi-final, the Coppa Italia is a competition Milan want to win. I am always ready to help my team with goals or assists, but the most important thing is that the team gets into the semi-final.”

Alessio Romagnoli played a brilliant through ball from the back to release Leao on goal. The Portuguese forward dribbled forward before sweeping the ball past Pepe Reina into the far bottom corner with the inside of his left boot.

The home side doubled the lead in the 41st minute. Tamo Basic conceded ball possession in the midfield, Brahim Diaz dribbled forward before spreading the ball to Leao on the left side of the penalty area. The 22-year-old skipped past defenders with a shimmy and rolled the ball across the six-yard box for Giroud to tap in.

Leao was asked if Giroud had thanked him for that assist laid on a silver platter for the tap-in from a couple of yards.

“Yes, but that is my job and I’m happy!”

Giroud netted his second of the night from Theo Hernandez’ cross before Kessie made it 4-0 in the 79th minute. Daniel Maldini’s free-kick ricocheted off Luiz Felipe and Manuel Lazzari, falling kindly for Kessie to drill home from eight yards out.
