Middlesbrough began their new league season with a 1-1 draw against West Brom before suffering a 3-2 loss at QPR. Last Thursday, Barnsley got the better of the Boro courtesy of Josh Benson’s lone strike in the third minute of injury time and went through to the next round of the EFL Cup. Chris Wilder’s side haven’t been able to register a victory this season so far. Against QPR, the Boro showed great fighting spirit to score twice in the second half after going down by three goals in the opening half. Matt Crooks and Marcus Forss netted for Middlesbrough but it wasn’t enough to avoid the defeat.
Sheffield United on the other hand, also got eliminated from the EFL Cup courtesy of Karlan Grant’s lone strike at the Hawthorns last Friday. Prior to that, the Blades defeated Millwall 2-0 to record their first win of the campaign. Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge netted for Sheffield United to earn three points at Bramall Lane. Paul Heckingbottom’s side would be hoping to continue their winning run in the league when they visit Riverside stadium on Sunday.
Middlesbrough boss Wilder is likely to revert back to his strongest starting eleven on Sunday. Jonny Howson, Matt Crooks, Isaiah Jones and Ryan Giles are expected to come back into the playing eleven. Marcus Forss could lead the line with Duncan Watmore in support. As for Sheffield United, Ahmedhodzic, Egan and Clark are likely to form the three-man defence with Baldock and Norrington-Davies occupying the flanks.
Middlesbrough probable starting lineup: Steffen; Dijksteel, Lenihan, McNair, Jones, Crooks, Howson, McGee, Giles; Watmore, Forss
Sheffield United probable starting lineup: Foderingham; Ahmedhodzic, Egan, Clark; Baldock, Norwood, Fleck, Norrington-Davies; Berge, Ndiaye; Brewster
