Middlesbrough will be keen to overcome their poor start to the new season when they face Barnsley in the first round of the EFL Cup. Ideally, Middlesbrough should be considered the favourites at home on Wednesday night, however, their start to the new campaign will give the League One side a lot of hope. Hence, Barnsley will back themselves to produce an upset win at Riverside Stadium. However, they have to be at the top of their game to get the win as the hosts will be looking to make a statement after losing their last match.

In the Championship this season, Middlesbrough started with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion. However, things went from bad to worse in their next fixture when they found themselves 3-0 down at Queens Park Rangers in the first 38 minutes. But, an inspired fightback from Chris Wilder’s side saw them reduce the deficit to 3-2 in the end. On the other hand, Barnsley started their League One campaign with a narrow defeat to Plymouth Argyle. However, they responded well to that setback with a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Town at the weekend.
