Mexico had an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign, recording eight wins from 14 games to collect 28 points, level with first-placed Canada, but separated by goal-difference. However, since booking their place in the finals earlier this year, El Tri have just two wins from their last seven games across all competitions. Mexico is preparing to make their eighth successive appearance at the global event. In their last outing against Paraguay, Derlis Gonzalez’ lone goal separated the two sides at Mercedes Benz Arena on September 1.
Peru, on the other hand, managed to secure a fifth place finish in the South American qualifying group and earned a place in the intercontinental playoff. But AFC outfit Australia prevailed 5-4 winners on penalties to break the hearts of the Peruvians. After failing to qualify for the World Cup, Peruvian federation have put the future of the national side in the hands of Juan Reynoso, who, as a player, captained his team to a semi-final appearance at the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
