Mason Greenwood, 19 netted his 16th Premier League goal for United with a powerfully struck effort against Aston Villa. The goal helped the Red Devils record a comprehensive 3-1 win over the hosts at Villa Park. Greenwood’s goal made him the highest-scoring teenager in the club’s Premier League history. Consider this, it is more than Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Ryan Giggs.

That is an illustrious group of star names that Mason Greenwood now stands at the top of. His surge of form in recent weeks has helped Manchester United reach the Europa League final. It has helped them secure the Champions League qualification next season. Greenwood has now hit seven goals in his past 10 games in all competitions. He has 11 in total this season, having ended last year’s campaign with five goals in 10 appearances.

Greenwood made his league debut for United as a 17-year-old in March 2019, when he became the second-youngest player to feature for the club in the Premier League, second only to fellow academy graduate Angel Gomes.

He scored his first league goal against Sheffield United later that year and has since gone on to find the net 16 times in 62 league appearances, a tally no other player achieved while still in their teenage years at Old Trafford.

Rookie mistakes by Mason Greenwood

Greenwood was the centre of attraction during the senior England call-up in August 2020. But, it was at that moment when fame got the better of him. A stupid, childish mistake saw him and Phil Foden sent home from the training camp. This began the endless stories questioning his mentality and attitude.

Greenwood made an error – a bad one – and he knew it. But he wasn’t the first and he certainly won’t be the last. The rest of the attacks on him have been proven to be completely unfounded and nothing more than tabloid gossip. But, credit to the forward, he has ignored the outside world, and got on with rewriting his own story.

Now he can point to some genuine, cold hard facts which demonstrate just how good he is, and how everything else written about him should be tossed in the bin. Greenwood has already shown the hunger required to silence his critics once, and he won’t stop until he is a bonafide star of the game. Sit back and enjoy the ride, Red Devils, it’s going to be an exciting one.
