Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford might miss the first couple of months in the new season after the club confirmed that the 23-year-old will undergo surgery “imminently” to resolve his shoulder injury. It is reported that the English international could be back in training within five weeks of the surgery. However, it would be approximately 12 weeks until he returns to action, meaning that he would be ruled out until late October. It will be a big blow for the club and its supporters. With the arrival of Jadon Sancho earlier this summer, fans were eager to see Rashford on left and Sancho on right flank. But they have to wait a little longer to see them both playing together.

Marcus Rashford, who was limited to substitute appearances for England during their run to the Euro 2020 final, made 64 appearances for club and country in 2020/21. A United statement read, “Following consultation between Marcus, the manager, club medical staff and specialists, Marcus will undergo surgery imminently to resolve his shoulder injury. He will now focus on his rehabilitation in order to return as soon as possible.”

The United academy graduate represented England at Euro 2020 as Gareth Southgate’s side went all the way to the final before losing in a penalty shoot-out to Italy. Marcus Rashford was one of the players who missed the penalty in the shootout against Italy. Without Rashford in contention for a start, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side kick off their Premier League season at home to Leeds on August 14.

What Marcus Rashford said about it earlier?

The Manchester United forward spoke last month about the prospect of having an operation, while with the England camp. “Obviously I am not performing at my best and what I know I can perform to,” Rashford said three weeks ago. “Whatever that is down to, it doesn’t really matter because it has been going on since early on in the season. I managed to get through the season with United.

“I think I had 36 goal involvements, so I can’t look back at the year and say ‘mmm, I should have taken time off to do this and do that’. That’s just not the way I look at things. I just want to be available for every game.”

Meanwhile, United legend Bryan Robson also spoke about the situation recently. He was quoted as saying by manutd.com, “I mean, if there’s a weakness there, then the best thing is, if he has been advised that he should have an operation on it, then bang, get straight in, because, like me, I missed half of the World Cup in 1986 because of my shoulder.”

“When I got back to England, I had the operation and never had another problem with it for the rest of my career.”
