Malta will host San Marino in a UEFA Nations League fixture at Ta Qali Stadium on Sunday. Both sides are heading into the tie on the back of defeats. Malta were beaten 2-1 by Estonia in their Nations League fixture, three days ago, while the visitors suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Iceland in an international friendly last time out. After two rounds of games, Malta sit second in League D Group 2 standings with three points, while San Marino are at the bottom of the three-team group with zero points. Meanwhile this will be the third-ever meeting between the two nations and Malta has an upper hand, having picked up two wins from their last two encounters.   

Malta began their 2022-23 Nations League campaign with a 2-0 victory over San Marino in the reverse fixture last week, before going down 2-1 at home to Estonia. Three days ago, in Ta Qali, Estonia took the lead through Kosntantin Vassiljev before Malta equalised through Karl Hein’s own goal. Just when it looked like the points would be shared, Henri Anier netted the winner in the fourth minute of injury time to clinch three points for Estonia. As a result, Mata are now playing a chasing game in this three-team group. It was Malta’s second defeat in the year 2022, while the remaining three games ended in victories.

San Marino, on the other hand, are winless in the Nations League so far, having lost both their games against Malta and Estonia respectively, In Tallinn, Estonia netted twice in the opening half through Robert Kirss and Joonam Tamm to take all three points. In the previous game, which was an international friendly against Iceland, Fabrizio Constantini’s side put up a resilient performance to come away with a respectable 1-0 defeat against a much higher ranked Iceland. Aron Prandarsson scored the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute.

Probable Lineups

Malta defender Jean Borg’s fitness is a cause of concern for head coach Mangia. The 24-year-old was forced off with a knock in the defeat to Estonia. Henry Bonello should continue in goal with three central defenders in front of him. As for San Marino, Constantini has a fully-fit squad at his disposal. Captain Matteo Vitaioloi is set to make his 77th international appearance. Elia Benedettini could return in goal in place of Aldo Simoncini.
