Liverpool will host Newcastle United in a Premier League fixture at Anfield on Wednesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a sensational 9-0 victory over Bournemouth last Saturday, while Newcastle secured a 1-1 draw at Wolves, a day later. The Magpies are currently occupying 10th position in the standings with six points from four games, while Liverpool are sitting two places behind them with five points.

Liverpool began their league campaign with two successive draws against Fulham (2-2) and Crystal Palace (1-1) before losing to Manchester United (2-1) at Old Trafford. However, the Reds bounced back in emphatic fashion to put nine goals past Bournemouth without reply last Saturday. Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino netted a brace, while Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Chris Mempham, and Fabio Carvalho scored one goal each. Meanwhile, Chris Mempham scored an own goal at Anfield. After the game against the Magpies, Liverpool will travel to Goodison Park to face Everton, before beginning their Champions League campaign in Italy against Napoli on September 7.
Newcastle, on the other hand, have been unbeaten in the league so far, registering three draws and one win. In their last game against Wolves, Eddie Howe’s side snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat courtesy of Allan Saint-Miximin’s last-ditch equaliser. It was the Magpies’ third successive draw, the previous two coming against Brighton (0-0) and Manchester City (3-3). Meanwhile their only victory came against Nottingham Forest (2-0) in their first match of the season.
Liverpool has a long list of absentees due to injuries as the likes of Diogo Jota, Alex Oxlade-chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate, Calvin Ramsay and Naby Keita are occupying the medical room. Meanwhile striker Darwin Nunez is suspended for Wednesday’s match. Therefore Firmino is likely to start as the centre-forward with Mohammed Salah and Diaz in support. As for Newcastle, last game’s hero, Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes, and Callum Wilson are doubtful for the match against the Reds. Chris Wood is expected to be the target-man up front with Almiron and Fraser in support.
