It is no exaggeration to say that Liverpool suffered immensely in the absence of their star defender Virgil van Dijk this season. The 29-year-old Dutchman has missed the majority of the campaign after suffering damage to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He picked up the horrific injury against Everton last October when he collided with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby.

It was not clear whether he will return to action this season. Some doubts were also raised about his participation in the upcoming European Championship. Van Dijk has now provided an update about his injury situation by uploading a video of himself training on Twitter. In the video, he can be seen working hard at his recovery to return to action.

The Dutchman has been a vital cog of Liverpool’s defence since joining them in January 2018. He has played a crucial role in shoring up the Reds’ backline as they went on to win Champions League and Premier League titles. Understandably, the team struggled to cope in van Dijk’s absence.

What made things worse was that Joe Gomez and Joel Matip were also sidelined for much of the campaign through injuries. This forced Liverpool to add defensive reinforcement in the January transfer market to strengthen its struggling backline.

New additions

Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies arrived at Anfield in January but their defence has looked shaky for the most part of the season with Liverpool currently languishing in sixth place in the Premier League table (54 points from 33 matches) and are four points below fourth-placed Chelsea.

Van Dijk, who has been providing regular updates of his comeback trail, has yet again reassured his fans with the latest video that he is working hard to return to full fitness. In the video, he can be seen running out on the club’s training ground. It will be a big boost for the fans to see their star defender pushing himself to recover quickly.

Previously, his club manager Jurgen Klopp said it would be unlikely to see Van Dijk returning before the end of the season, though he had refused to rule out the possibility.

It will be interesting to see whether the Dutchman will be fit in time to play for the Netherlands at this summer’s delayed Euro 2020.
