Liverpool have reached an agreement for the transfer of defender Ibrahima Konate from German football club RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old defender has agreed a long-term contract with the Reds from July 1. The same is subject to international clearance and a successful work permit application process after terms are finalised and the passing of a medical. Konate will move to Anfield after four seasons in the Bundesliga with Leipzig. The defender made 95 appearances and scored four goals.

“I’m really happy to be joining such a massive club like Liverpool. It’s a really exciting moment for me and my family and I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and getting started on this new chapter,” he said as quoted by Liverpool’s official website.

“Right now, my focus is on the U21 European Championships with France, but after this competition I know I will be joining one of the best teams in the world and that gives me a great feeling. I have worked very hard for many years to get to this point, but I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at RB Leipzig and all the people I worked with there – the coaches, my teammates, the staff and especially the fans. Your support helped me grow up during my time there and become not only a better player, but a better man and I will always be grateful for it,” added Konate.

“Fantastic time with RB Leipzig”

The defender was full of praise for Leipzig, hailing the club for showing trust in him and giving the necessary time to settle in and develop.

“I had a fantastic time with RB Leipzig. In 2017, it was a very big step for me to move for France to Germany. From the very beginning, the club showed the all-important trust in me and gave me the necessary time to settle in and develop. Even during my injuries, I’ve had full support. I’m very grateful for these special four years, which have been very influential for me as a young player well as the club. Now I’m looking forward to a new chapter at Liverpool and of course, I’m hoping for a reunion on the international stage,” he said as quoted by the German club’s official website.

Liverpool have suffered due to a leaky backline and Konate’s inclusion is a step in the right direction.
