Everton were the latest side to be on the receiving end of a big defeat against in-form Premier League leaders Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side were excellent throughout the game as they registered a comfortable 3-0 victory over the home side at the Goodison Park. Manchester City are known for playing possession-based football and suffocating opponents through their ability to keep hold of the ball. However, in this match, they also showed another dimension to their game by going direct at times.

Despite losing the match, Everton manager Sean Dyche hailed Manchester City and their approach to adapt themselves as per the need of the game. “A fine side came here today. I thought we were well organised, and I thought the structure of the team was right. Actually, the physicality of the team was right. They were trying to pass, trying to break, and they couldn’t, but then finally did from playing longer passes and stretching the back four as quickly as they could,” Dyche told evertontv.

Referring to the goals, the manager said, “It was a great finish. We could have defended it better maybe, but there was a touch in there and it was a very clever finish. The second one was really disappointing for me. It’s a straight ball; knockdown football. They get on it quicker than we do, and it’s a good cross, and a good finish from a top striker. At the end of the day, that’s a really disappointing goal, and a killer goal. We were 2-0 down out of pretty much nothing. But, like I say, that’s what these teams do.”

Sean Dyche on Manchester City’s style of play

This defeat means Everton are still very much in the relegation battle. They cannot relax just yet and need few more points to guarantee their Premier League safety. Dyche then compared their opponents from this game against Manchester City and their previous match against Brighton & Hove Albion. “It was a different kind of game today. I know Brighton play a very specific way. Man City can mix their game up, and we know they can pass and play. The goals come from going back to front a lot quicker. It’s knockdown football, but high quality, of course,” he added.

Sean Dyche also reserved praise for Manchester City and their ability to adapt to the game. He praised them for changing their style of play to score the goals. “They’ve learned throughout the years – their manager, their players – they know how to affect games. They couldn’t break us down, so they changed their style. That’s what clever players and clever outfits do, and that’s what we’ve got to continue to learn. Strangely, we probably had the best chance until their goal – from Mason Holgate. I thought we were in the game and could’ve caused that weird upset today, but it wasn’t to be,” he added.
