Lanus will host Independiente del Valle in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana last-16 fixture on Thursday. The first leg at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa ended 2-1 in favour of Independiente. Richard Schunke opened the scoring for the Ecuadorian club before Lanus equalised through Tomas Belmonte. Just when it looked like the match would end in a draw, Jaime Ayovi netted an injury-time goal to help Independiente earn a crucial win in the two legged tie and keep one foot in the quarter-finals. The Ecuadorian club is seeking their first appearance in the least-8 of this competition since 2020.Â

Lanus are heading into the tie on the back of a disappointing 3-0 loss at Union in the Argentine Primera Division fixture last Saturday. Goals from Daniel Eduardo Juarez, Imanul Machoka and Facundo Aguero handed Lanus their third defeat of the season. Independiente del Valle, on the other hand, have not lost a game in which they have tallied first since mid-April.. The Ecuadorian club’s form off late has been pretty good, winning three of their last six games across all competitions.

Lanus’ attack would be led by Jose Sand, who has three goals to his name in this competition, with Varaldo and Acosta occupying the flanks. Belmonte, who was on the scoresheet in the opening leg could be deployed behind the striker on a free role. M. Gonzalez is expected to sit in front of the back four and provide cover to the full-backs and do the cleaning up job. As for Independiente del Valle, Bauman would lead the line with Sornoza and Angulo in support. Cabezas and Gaibor would occupy the flanks with Faravelli and Gaibor pulling the strings in the midfield.
