Kerala Blasters FC announced the contract extension of their young defender Bijoy Varghese that will keep him at the club till 2025. The 22-year-old Kerala-boy will be donning the Jersey number 21 in the upcoming season. This is the same number that the club had retired after Sandesh Jhingan’s departure. Bijoy made just five appearances for the Yellow Army in the 2021-22 Indian super League (ISL) season, but his performances were enough for the management to offer him a new deal. This shows that the club has been keen on developing and holding on to young Indian players.

The local lad started his football journey with Youth team of Kovalam FC. In 2018, he not only was a part of the Kerala team which reached the finals of the International School Championship but also won the best defender award.

He was also part of the football team of Sports Authority of India that participated in the youth league. In 2021, the defender became part of the KBFC reserve team and then, consistent performances in the KPL earned him a senior team call up.

“I am really excited that I am going to be a part of Kerala Blasters for a long time. I am really happy to be working under Coach Ivan and intend to work harder, get better at my game and sharpen my skills.  I hope to give all the club’s passionate fans memories by giving my 100 percent in all the games that I play,” Varghese said on his contract extension as quoted by ISL’s official website.

“I’m extremely happy about Bijoy. He is a great example that everything is possible, he worked hard and never gave up. He is a product of Kerala Blasters youth. I would like to congratulate Bijoy on this extension. I hope he will be a positive example to all young players who start to play in KBFC youth sector,” Karolis Skinkys, Sporting Director of KBFC added.

KBFC had a wonderful 2021-22 ISL season, making it to the final of the tournament where they lost to Hyderabad FC on penalties. The club management has already extended the contract of head coach Ivan Vukomanovic and is now trying to retain as many players as possible for the upcoming season.
