Kaoru Mitoma is a Japanese professional footballer who plays for the club Brighton & Hove Albion. Mitoma was raised in Kawasaki prefecture after being born in Oita prefecture. It was his brother, who played football as a hobby, who inspired him to start playing. When he was young, he joined the Kawasaki Frontale U-10 and Frontale’s sub-organization, and the competitive atmosphere encouraged him to realise that he wanted to be a professional player. Mitoma was chosen to represent Japan with the under-23 national team at the 2017 and 2019 Universiade competitions, the 2018 Asian Games, and the 2019 Toulon Tournament while he was a student at Tsukuba. He majored in physical education and played for Tsukuba in the Kanto University Soccer League. During his final three seasons, he was named to the league’s all-star XI.
Mitoma and the senior team of Kawasaki Frontale reached an agreement on a professional contract in July 2018 that would begin in 2020. He became the first rookie to double digit goals in the top division since Yoshinori Muto on the first day of the 2020 J1 League. He made his official pro debut on that day.
On August 10, 2021, Mitoma signed a four-year contract with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion and immediately went on loan at Union SG. In a 4-2 home victory over Seraing on October 16, 2021, he scored his first goal for Union SG.
