Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Roberto Firmino has sustained a “serious hamstring injury” during their victory over Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian picked up the issue after coming on at half-time of Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League victory at Anfield. He is now is facing a period on the sidelines. On Friday, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Bobby is not good news with a serious hamstring injury, really unfortunate. We don’t know exactly how long he will be out but it will be not now after the international break directly. We have to work on that.”

Besides, Joe Gomez (calf) and Curtis Jones will also miss Sunday’s trip to West Ham United. However, the manager is hopeful that the duo will be available again soon after the international break. Klopp explained: “Curtis is a completely different story [to Firmino], he was very unlucky in training – he got a finger that scratched the eye. I had a lot of injuries to players in my career, that was not involved. He is on the way back but we have to see how long exactly.”

“He will be back after the international break, for sure, but in the international break we have to see when he can start doing proper stuff again. And Joey, hopefully after the international break as well.”

Klopp on Keita and Milner

Speaking about Naby Keita and James Milner (both hamstring), the manager said during his pre-match press conference: “We will see. For them, I have hope for after the international break but I don’t know exactly.”

“We have to wait. That’s two weeks and a few days from now on, so that’s what I would really wish for but I cannot promise that. But that’s what we are working on.”

On the positive front, midfielders Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are set to be in contention for this weekend’s visit to London, after both returned from injury against Atletico in the midweek.

“Very important, you see that. Fab was clear – he was not that long out – that he can maybe go, how we decided then 60 minutes,” Klopp stated. “And swapping that with Thiago was probably exactly the right thing to do, now they should be both a big step ahead, so all good.”

Jurgen Klopp: Harvey Elliott’s rehab progress looks really good

Meanwhile, Klopp reckons that good progress is continuing to be made in young midfielder Harvey Elliott’s rehabilitation from an ankle injury. The promising young midfielder underwent surgery in September after suffering a fracture dislocation of the left joint due to a challenge in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Leeds United.

Elliott was pictured undergoing his latest rehabilitation session with the club’s medical team earlier this week. Klopp has confirmed that he is taking positive steps towards a return.

“He’s great, Harvey’s great,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com at the AXA Training Centre on Friday. “I have no idea when exactly it’ll be, but we can’t wait actually. It looks really good.

“Whichever person you speak to from the rehab department, you hear that he is so determined, he is really very positive all the time with us here. It is nice to see him smiling the whole day and working hard. He will be back, but how soon I don’t know.”
