Jorginho’s second-half penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Manchester United in a Premier League encounter on Sunday. The Blues had their lead at the top of the table cut to only one point, following the frustrating result. The visitors, led by Michael Carrick for the first time in the Premier League, made their presence felt with a fine performance. Goalkeeper David De Gea was in inspired form during the first half, and attempted to frustrate Chelsea to the core. The United goalkeeper denied Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi and a spectacular drive from Antonio Rudiger. Interestingly, Rudiger’s drive was touched onto the crossbar, which indicates the close margins involved.

Jadon Sancho put United ahead on 50 minutes when he took advantage of Jorginho’s heavy touch. Sancho continued to sail through unopposed to beat Edouard Mendy for his first goal in the Premier League. Jorginho made amends for his error by drawing Chelsea level from the penalty spot on 69 minutes. The penalty was earned after Thiago Silva was fouled by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku each made substitute appearances. However, both Fred and Rudiger missed chances to win the match late on. Chelsea remain top with 30 points, one ahead of Man City. Manchester United stay eighth on 18 points.

“It’s a big point to Manchester United”

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane was full of praise for United, terming it as a “big point”.

“It’s a big point to Manchester United because Chelsea were by far the better team. But United were spirited, stuck at it, so they will take a little bit of momentum into their season now. Hopefully they can kick on. Lots of changes over the last week, a new manager coming in next week, but there are still huge question marks over a lot of these players. But they deserve credit because they stuck together in what was a spirited performance rather than one of real quality. I said if United were to get anything from the game it would maybe be down to a bit of arrogance from Chelsea, which proved to be the case with the goal,” said Keane as quoted by Sky Sports.

“To say United played well today, or during the week [is a stretch], but they’ve got two positive results and that is what you always fall back on, the results. David de Gea’s said after the game United fought for everything, but that is what you should be doing every week. It’s as if these players pick and choose their moments when they are up for it. If you want to play for Manchester United and compete for titles, you do that week in, week out. There was spirit today, and they deserve credit for that, but ultimately you want more,” he added.
