Alexis Sanchez scored a last-gasp winner in the extra time as Inter Milan beat Juventus 2-1 to lift the Italian Super Cup trophy at San Siro on Wednesday. Juventus broke the deadlock through Weston Mckennie mid-way through the first half before Lautaro Martinez equalized from the penalty spot for Inter Milan. Both sides couldn’t be separated in the regulation time and the game went into extra time. Sanchez pounced on a defensive error in the final seconds of extra time to help Inter secure the title.

The Nerazzurri had a full strength squad to choose from as Eden Dezeko recovered from COVID-19.  Inter Milan were coming off eight consecutive Serie A wins. Meanwhile Juventus had Federico Chiesa out for the season with a knee injury, Matthijs de Ligt and Juan Cuadrado suspended, goalkeeper Wojcuech Szczesny unavailable after getting his COVID vaccine late and Leonardo Bonucci was not fully fit.

The clash between the Scudetto holders and Coppa Italia winners lived up to the expectations, it was an end-to-end affair. In the opening minutes, Dezeko’s header from Ivan Perisic’s cross went over the crossbar. And then, Stefan de Vrij headed inches wide from a corner.

After the initial surge from Inter, Juventus slowly started to get into the game. McKennie’s effort from Federico Bernardeschi’s cross was blocked by Milan Skriniar. However, five minutes before the half-hour-mark, Juve broke the deadlock. Alvaro Morata’s corner from the left flank was headed home by McKennie.

Sanchez’ equaliser

Inter leveled the score in the 35th minute. Dzeko was brought down by Mattia De Scigilo inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Martinez stepped up and smashed the ball past Mattia Perin and into the top corner to equalise.

After the break, Adrien Rabiot’s low cross from the left found its way across to Bernardeschi who was unmarked but his first-time attempt missed the target. And then, the Italian winger fired over after skipping past two defenders. Perin made a superb save to deny Denzel Dumfries’ header as Hakan Calhanoglu’s in-swinging cross from the left found the Dutchman at the far post.

In the extra-time, Sanchez’ free header from Calhanoglu’s corner went inches wide, while Paulo Dybala’s long range attempt went over the bar. Just when it looked like the game was heading into penalties, Federico Dimarco’s cross from the left was chested down by Alex Sandro inside the box, Matteo Darmian got to the ball before Chiellini and Sanchez got to the tap-in to win it for Inter Milan.
