Days after signing Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 golden ball winner Greg Stewart from Jamshedpur FC, Mumbai City FC have bolstered their team with the recruitment of David Williams, the Times Of India reported. The ATK Mohun Bagan striker is currently playing in the AFC Cup in Kolkata. Mumbai City FC, who won the league winners shield and the ISL trophy in 2021, finished fifth last season and are doing some serious business in the transfer market ahead of the upcoming season.

Williams had training stint with Liverpool

Williams made the switch from Wellington Phoenix to ISL in 2019, playing for Atletico de Kolkata. He made 18 appearances in his first season and scored seven goals, along with five assists. Since the merger with Mohun Bagan, the 34-year-old continues with ATK Mohun Bagan for the next two seasons, making 38 appearances along the way and registering 10 goals and three assists. He had training stints with Belgian side Club Brugge and English Premier League team Liverpool during his youth career.

Williams and Roy Krishna formed lethal strike partnership

The forward has played with various A-League clubs over his career and also plied his trade for European clubs like Brondby IF and Haldas. The striker played for Wellington Phoenix in 2018-19. Williams went on to form a lethal strike partnership in the initial two years for the Kolkata outfit. However, in the last season, Williams often played as a second fiddle to Krishna, getting only 656 minutes of game time in 17 appearances.

It would be interesting to see the combination of Williams and Greg Stewart

Mumbai City FC failed to qualify for the play-offs, finishing three points adrift of the top four at the end of the ISL league stage last term. However, the Islanders had an impressive debut AFC Champions League campaign, winning two games and registering one draw. They couldn’t make it to the knockout stages. The Islanders have reportedly acquired the signature of Stewart who played a pivotal role in JFC winning the League Shield last term. He scored 10 goals and 10 assists in 21 ISL appearances.  Williams could form an effective strike partnership with Stewart in the upcoming season.
