Two World Cup bound teams Iran and Uruguay will face each other in an international friendly at the NV Arena in Austria on Friday. The two nations progressed to the finals of the global event with relative ease, as Iran secured a top spot in Group A of the third round Asian qualification , while Uruguay secured a third place finish, behind Brazil and Argentina, in the CONMEBOL WC qualifying group consisting of 10 teams. Iran cruised through the World Cup qualifying, winning eight of their ten games to pocket 25 points and secured top spot in a group featuring the likes of South Korea, UAE and Iraq among others. Team Melli are placed in Group B of the World Cup, consisting of the likes of England, Wales and USA. Carlos Queiroz’ side would be optimistic of their chances of making it to the knockout stages of the global event. In their last match against Algeria on June12, Team Melli lost 2-1 despite the fact that Alireza Jahanabaksh got on the score sheet.

Uruguay, on the other hand, put five goals past Panama in a friendly on the same day. Edinson Cavani netted a brace, while Nicolas de la Cruz, Maximiliano Gonzalez and Diego Rossi scored one goal each for La Celeste. It was Uruguay’s sixth victory in their last seven games across all competitions. The Sky Blue last tasted defeat in November 2021 against Bolivia (3-0) at Estadio Hernando Siles. Uruguay, who are placed in Group H, consisting of South Korea, Portugal and Ghana, would be hoping to make the knockout stages of the World Cup for a fourth consecutive time.

FC Porto striker Mehdi Taremi is likely to lead Iran’s attack with Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh occupying the flanks. Bretford-man Saman Goddos is expected to be deployed as an attacking midfielder, with Mourollahi in support. As for Uruguay, Liverpool-man Darwin Nunez is likely to partner veteran Luis Suarez up front. Cavani is unavailable for the September round of fixtures because of fitness issues. Real Madrid-man Federico Valverde is another threat going forward.
