Inter thrashed arch rivals AC Milan 3-0 to claim the silverware in the mid-week, while the visitors are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 league win over Sampdoria last Monday.
Following their Supercoppa Italiana success in Saudi Arabia, Inter Milan will return to Serie A duties when they host Empoli at San Siro on Monday night. Inter thrashed arch rivals AC Milan 3-0 to claim the silverware in the mid-week, while the visitors are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 league win over Sampdoria last Monday. The victory helped Empoli to move to 12th spot in the Italian top flight standings, having collected 22 points from 18 games, while Nerazzuri are sitting at the third position, with 37 points to their name, just one adrift of second-placed Milan, who are the reigning champions.

Inter came up with a stunning performance to get the better of city rivals Milan and secure their second straight Supercoppa Italiana title on Wednesday. Federico Dimarco opened the scoring inside the opening ten minutes, before veteran striker Edin Dzeko doubled the lead mid-way through the first half. And then, Lautaro Martinez’ 77th-minute strike sealed the win for Inter and helped them lift the trophy in Riyadh. Prior to that, Simone Inzaghi’s side had edged past Hellas Verona last Saturday, courtesy of Martinez’s early strike. As a result, Nerazzurri have won eight of their last 10 in the top flight, including against previously unbeaten leaders Napoli.
Empoli, on the other hand, secured a narrow win over Sampdoria in their last outing, through Tyronne Ebuehi’s 55th-minute strike. It was their fifth league-win of the season. Meanwhile, the Blues are now unbeaten in their last four Serie A-matches, including two wins. Scoring goals has been a cause of concern for Empoli, as only the bottom three clubs have netted fewer goals, however, head coach Paolo Zanetti will be hoping that the re-signing of experienced striker Francesco Caputo could solve their problems to some extent up front.
Inter boss Inzaghi will be tempted to rotate his squad on Monday in order to manage the workload of the players. The likes of Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij and Kristian Asllani are all poised to get a place in the starting eleven. Striker Romelu Lukaku is only fit enough to feature on the bench. Marcelo Brozovic and Sami Handanovic are sidelined with injuries. As for Empoli, Razvan Marin, Ardian Ismajli, Mattia Destro and Alberto Grassi are occupying the medical room. Inter loanee Martin Satriano might partner Ciccio Caputo up front.
