Bengaluru FC brought an end to their seven-match winless streak with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Chennaiyin FC in an end-to-end contest. The Hero Indian Super League (ISL) match saw Bengaluru side bounce back from a goal deficit to beat Chennai outfit at the Tilak Maidan stadium in Vasco, Goa on Thursday. The entertaining contest would have kept the fans excited, as the momentum kept swinging from one side to another. It all started with Mirlan Murzaev (4’) giving Chennaiyin FC a great start with an early goal.

However, Bengaluru FC bounced back late in the first half with goals from Cleiton Silva (38’ (P)) and Alan Costa (43’). Chennaiyin FC rallied back after the restart to restore the parity early in the second half through Rahim Ali (49’). But, quick-fire goals from Udanta Singh (70’) and Pratik Chaudhari (74’) at the midway point during the second half swung the match in Bengaluru FC’s favour for good.

The win lifts Bengaluru FC into the eighth spot in the Indian Super League table while Chennaiyin FC stay sixth. The Blues are back in action on Tuesday when they face SC East Bengal while Chennaiyin FC take on Jamshedpur FC on Sunday.

‘We had confidence all the time’

Marco Pezzaiuoli, head coach of Bengaluru FC, has insisted that he never lost faith in his team’s abilities despite being on a seven-match winless run in the ISL. That unwanted streak came to an end with a 4-2 victory over Chennaiyin FC. After the match, Pezzaiuoli was asked in the press conference whether he needed such a match to get his team’s confidence back and also regain momentum.

“We had confidence all the time. I don’t think we played badly in this spell. The worst game we played was against ATK Mohun Bagan tactic wise and it was a 3-3 draw. I think if you win, you feel better. We can now enjoy the new year better. The team has been playing well from the first game. Sometimes we had bad luck. That’s it,” he explained.

Opening up about his substitutions and change in formation, he said, “We changed the formation from four to three at the back. We were trailing 1-0 and I wanted to win the game so I put an extra offensive player. And then we went 2-1 up and it was a good sign. But at half time the opponent also changed tactically and we struggled in the build-up. Then I changed again to four at the back and it was easy and that’s why we won the game.”
