Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was understandably delighted with his side’s performance in the 7-0 thumping of Norwich City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. He was particularly pleased with the attacking desire shown by a new-look front three and the wing-backs. The domination was such that the home side’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was largely untested. More than the goals, it was the overall approach to the match which seemed to please Tuchel most. “When we put on the shirt we want to do what we do at the best level on this day and from the very start,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website. “I’m very happy with the performance and very happy with the intensity and very happy with the effort that we put into this game.

“It was our fourth consecutive game as favourites and I like how we approach these games. There is no judging and there is no holding back. We played all in and that is what I like a lot, that’s why we deserve these victories at the moment and that’s the key. I’m very pleased that the wing-backs arrived in the box and that we have the freedom and we have constantly the spirit to attack the box and the spaces around the box and to score goals. It’s important that we bring bodies to the end of our attacks, it makes things easier.”

‘We have to keep on going in this way’

Despite the impressive victory, Tuchel wants his team to keep going in the same way. He believes his players have the ability to score a lot of goals, but he also cautioned them to be prepared when they face a tighter contest. “But I don’t want to get carried away too much because we play now four times in a row as favourites and I like the way we approach these games. It’s a humble approach and it’s an approach where we set our standards and we push ourselves and we play all in every match and are not distracted by the role which we are maybe seen in before the match,” he added.

“This is important and we have to keep on going in this way and anything is possible. If you have a bit of luck and you create more chances, then you become a bit more confident and we are capable of scoring four or seven goals, which is good, but there will also be games where things are closer and we need to be prepared for that also.”

Tuchel on Mount

Tuchel was understandably happy to see Mason Mount complete his first hat-trick for Chelsea. “To have the hat-trick for Mason is huge because that’s a massive moment for him. He’s very proud, he put a lot of pressure on himself. I feel him a little bit lighter, playing with a bit more freedom in the last few matches and this is what we need. There were a lot of games, and still are a lot of games, for him at a very young age,” he added.

“He’s very competitive and very serious about his goals that he wants to reach. So I feel him a bit lighter now and it means a lot to him that he has a hat-trick under his belt as an Academy boy. We play most games with three strikers and Mason is one of the strikers. You could say that Mason is between and eight and a 10, not a real striker, so we depend heavily on him in a key role. We depend on Mason and we want to because we like his style, we like where he comes from, we like his personality. He’s a top player and a top guy, so we’re happy for him.”
