Girona will host Athletic Bilbao in a La Liga fixture at Montilivi on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against leaders Real Madrid last Sunday, while Athletic Bilbao secured a narrow 1-0 win over Villarreal on the same day. The victory helped visitors to move to the sixth spot in the standings, having collected 21 points from 12 games. Girona, meanwhile, are languishing at the 17th position, with just 10 points to their name, level on points with Sevilla and Cadiz, who are in the relegation zone, but separated by goal-difference.

Last time out, Michel’s men came up with a resilient performance to earn a point away at Real Madrid. Los Blancos broke the deadlock through Vinicius Jr’s 70th-minute strike, before Christian Stuani leveled the score, from the penalty spot, ten minutes later. Girona were fortunate to avoid a defeat after a last-gasp VAR intervention denied Real a winner. The Whites and Reds have their home form solely to thank for them not being in the bottom three at present, as 80% of their points have come at the Montilivi.
Bilbao, on the other hand, have recorded six wins from their opening 12 league games thus far. Five of those victories came from their opening seven games. After going winless in four games, against the likes of Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Getafe and Barcelona, the Lions got back on track with a narrow 1-0 win over Villarreal last weekend. Inaki Williams’ 59th-minute strike separated the two sides at San Mames Barria.
