Not only in the 2018 World Cup, but Germany also performed poorly at last year’s Euro 2020 when they were eliminated in the round-of-16 stage.
Germany will be keen to put behind the painful memories of the 2018 World Cup when they kickstart their campaign in Qatar against Asian powerhouse Japan. The European giant went into Russia 2018 as the defending champions but shockingly failed to get out of the group stage. Four years later, Germany – under a new head coach – will be eager to cement their place among the elites in the ongoing World Cup. However, their task will not be easy on Wednesday, as they will be coming up against a tricky Japanese side.

Not only in the 2018 World Cup, but Germany also performed poorly at last year’s Euro 2020 when they were eliminated in the round-of-16 stage. Under new head coach Hansi Flick, they will be keen to go deep into the competition but the form is not on their side. In the Nations League, they could only manage seven points from six games to finish third in League A Group 3. On the other hand, Japan are also not in the best of forms. They are winless in their last two games, including a 2-1 defeat to Canada in a friendly last week. Japan exited in the last-16 stage in Russia 2018.

Barring a few niggles here and there, both sides have more or less the entire squad to pick from for their World Cup opener. It is unclear if Leroy Sane could be involved in this match, however, Thomas Muller, Niclas Fullkrug and Antonio Rudiger have a good chance of making it into the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Japan are sweating over the fitness situation of Hidemasa Morita and it is not clear whether he will be involved in the match. On a positive front though they could have Karou Mitoma and Wataru Endo available for this match. Takehiro Tomiyasu should also be fit enough to start for Japan on Wednesday.
Germany possible line-up: Neuer, Kehrer, Rudiger, Sule, Raum, Kimmich, Goretzka, Havertz, Hofmann, Gnabry, Muller
Japan possible line-up: Gonda, Sakai, Tomiyasu, Yoshida, Nagatomo, Endo, Shibasaki, Kamada, Ito, Minamino, Asano
