Gent will host Omonia in the first leg of the Europa League qualifying playoff at the Ghelamco stadium on Thursday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-1 win at Oostende in a Belgian Pro League fixture last Saturday. Meanwhile, Omonia suffered a 2-0 defeat to Apollon in the Cypriot Super Cup final last Friday. Gent got the better of Oostende courtesy of goals from Hugo Cuypers, Hyunseok Hong and Andrew Hjulsager. It was the Buffalos’ second league win of the season, while the other two ended in draws. Gent won the Belgian Cup last term by defeating Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties, after the game had ended goalless in regular time. Omonia, on the other hand, lost the Cypriot super cup final last Friday, against Apollon, courtesy of strikes from Bagaliy Dabo Va and Andreas Fillotis. Omonia finished seventh in the Cypriot first Division last lerm but managed to secure the domestic Cup title by defeating Ethnikos Achna 5-4 on penalties after both sides failed to score in regular time and extra time.
Gent’s midfield trio of Julien de Sart, Elisha Owusu and Tarik Tissoudali are sidelined with injuries. Therefore Marreh and Kums are likely to pull the strings from the middle of the park. Cuypers could lead the line with Hong and Hjulsager in support. As for Omonia, Matavz and Kakoullis could form the attacking duo with Lecjaks and Charalampous occupying the flanks.
