The match-winner for Manchester City on Wednesday night – Gabriel Jesus – has applauded Bernardo Silva’s contribution in their 2-1 win in the Champions League. Jesus’ goal from Bernardo’s delicate pass after 77 minutes inspired a come-from-behind victory for Manchester City against Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium. It saw Pep Guardiola’s men qualify for the knockout stages as the winners of the group. The visitors took the lead immediately after the interval through Kylian Mbappe, but Raheem Sterling’s equaliser shortly after allowed the platform for Jesus to grab the winner on the night.

The striker praised his Portugal teammate for beautifully setting him up inside the box. “Thanks to Bernardo! I know his quality, that’s why I waited and finished good,” he said, according to their club’s website. “I helped my team, that’s what I want to do when I come onto the pitch. It was a great ball from Bernardo so I had to score! We have a lot of players who can play well and help the team – our power as a team is this. Everyone wants to play a good pass to the other player. Nobody is selfish here – we all want to win the game.”

Bernardo: It was quite frustrating in the first half

Meanwhile, the assist provider Bernardo Silva was pleased with City’s fighting spirit to come from a goal down and claim all three points. “Very happy with the three points,” said the Portugal international. “Very happy because we qualified as first place in the group which is important for us. “And we’re also very happy because our fans deserved a good performance and a good win.

“It was quite frustrating in the first half, it felt like we were controlling the game and having the possession, but we were not scoring. After conceding, we had a great reaction to then go and score the goals and win the game. You’re never safe against PSG, if you even give them a little space, they will create chances. That is football – that’s how it is. It’s always tough against a team like this, I can imagine it was very exciting for the fans!”

Pep Guardiola delighted with PSG win

Pep Guardiola is understandably happy with the way Manchester City rallied from a goal deficit to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1. It means City have won Group A with a match to spare. Besides, RB Leipzig’s win against Club Brugge means that PSG are also through to the knockout phase.

“PSG, what a team, what players, what could I say?” said Pep in his post-match press conference. “The performance was quite similar to Paris a month ago. Today we created more chances in the first half. We pressed really well in Paris and we adjusted because we learnt what we do. They decided not to play with Di Maria, but they are so dangerous.

“They have good players so you can lose a game like this. The quality they have…we did so well. We were aggressive without the ball. We defended well. We did it. We played really well. In football the results are random. Nobody knows what will happen. What gives you consistency is how you perform and the way we are performing is really good.

“The people enjoy watching and hopefully we can sustain this for as long as possible. The players come back from injury and hopefully help us do it. They have a lot of quality, we tried to defend away from our goal because they can do anything.

“Except for the five minutes after our goal when they counter-attacked but could not finish because Ruben defended really well, so I say congratulations to everyone at our Club. We are into last 16 and will try our best in February to go to quarter-finals.”
