Mainz 05 will play Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly at Kufstein Arena on Monday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting results. Mainz suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Besiktas last Friday, while the Premier League outfit thrashed 1860 Munich 3-0 on the same day in their last outing. Mainz managed to secure an eighth place finish in their last Bundesliga season, while Newcastle finished at the 11th place in the 2021-22 Premier League standings. Meanwhile both teams will be participating in their third friendly of this summer.

Mainz haven’t made a great start to their pre-season, losing the first two fixtures against Wormatia (4-0) and Besiktas (1-0). Cenk Tousun’s goal proved to be the difference against Besiktas in the last outing. After the game against Newcastle, the German outfit will take on Erzgebirge in the DFB-Pokal before beginning their new Bundesliga campaign against VFL Bochum on August 6. Newcastle United, on the other hand, began their preparation for the new season with a dominant 5-1 win over Gateshead before thrashing 1860 Munich. The Magpies will also play friendlies against Atlanta and Athletic Club before their Premier League opener against newly promoted Nottingham Forest on August 6.
