In the 2001 final, the Violets got the better of Parma 2-1 on aggregate. After enduring a difficult start to the season, Vincenzo Italiano’s side have managed to get themselves back on track, having recorded six wins from their last eight games across all competition. The Violets resumed their campaign following the World Cup break, with a 1-1 Serie A draw against Monza, before securing a dramatic 2-1 win over Sassuolo, last Saturday. Ricardo Saponara put the Violets ahead three minutes into the second half, before Domenico Berardi leveled the score, from the penalty spot, in the 57th-minute. Just when it looked like the points might be shared Nicolas Gonzalez scored the winner from the penalty spot to take all three points for Viola.Â
Sampdoria, on the other hand, are in danger of dropping out of the Italian top flight for the first time in more than a decade, having recorded just two wins, while losing 12 times in the league thus far. Although Dejan Stankovic’s side resumed their campaign following the World Cup break with a 2-1 win away to Sassuolo, the Blue-Circled lost to Napoli in the very next outing, last weekend. Victor Osimhen and Elif Almas netted either side of the break, to hand a sixth defeat in the last seven league-games for Sampdoria.Â
Fiorentina forward Nicolas Gonzalez is back after a long injury layoff and is expected to feature on Thursday. Meanwhile, midfielder Sofiyan Amrabat, who played a key role in Morocco’s impressive World Cup campaign, is likely to return to the playing eleven, having been rested in the last two outings. As for Sampdoria, Fabio Quagliarella, Ignacio Pussetto and Manuel De Luca are sidelined with injuries, while Omar Colley and Andrea Conti are doubtful for the game against the Violets because of flu and Tendonitis respectively. Lammers could spearhead the attack, with Sabiri and Djuricic in support.Â
Fiorentina possible line-up: Cerofolini, Dodo, Martinez, Igor, Ranieri, Castrovili, Amrabat, Gonzalez, Barak, Saponara, Kouame
Sampdoria possible line-up: Contini, Amione, Rocha, Muru, Zanoli, Rincon, Winks, Augello, Sabiri, Djuricic, Lammers
