FIFA World Cup 2022: Who won Golden Ball, Golden Boot & Man of the Match in final?

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is over with Argentina being crowned the champions. Here are the winners of the individual awards in the final.

The FIFA World Cup is finally over with the dreams of millions around the world coming true. Lionel Messi has led his Argentina side to his first and the country’s third World Cup triumph. The final was a fitting end to what was one of the greatest tournaments of all time. After being outplayed for 80 minutes, France suddenly found inspiration in the form of Kylian Mbappe who scored two quick goals to take the game into extra time. Two goals shared evenly and lots of nerve wrecking moments later, it came down to the penalty shootout. As destiny would have it, Argentina won with Lionel Messi finally getting his hand on the World Cup trophy.

Golden Ball Winner

Lionel Messi was fittingly awarded the 2022 FIFA World Cup golden ball. The PSG man now holds the record for being the first player to be awarded two World Cup golden balls. Messi scored in every knockout game for Argentina including the final where he got two decisive goals. Overall, the little genius scored seven goals accompanied by three assists. The captain rightfully delivered his part and now has very few doubters to his claim of being the greatest player of all time.

Golden Boot Winner

The 2022 FIFA World Cup golden boot went to France’s Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe had a lot of weight on his shoulders coming into the World Cup with injuries to key players. His supposed to be strike partner, Karim Benzema was also ruled out days before the tournament. However, Mbappe stepped up and produced a sensational tournament. His two goals in the round of 16 fixture against Poland turned out to be decisive. He will consider himself very unlucky to have ended on the the losing side after scoring a hattrick in the World Cup final. However, if anything this gives an indication of the spectacular displays to come from him for a long time. In total, he scored eight goals in the World Cup taking his overall World Cup tally to 12 goals.

Man of the Match

A final is surely an occasion that demands the best and top performance from everyone, especially when it is a World Cup final. In a game that ended 3-3 and was decided on penalties, there were surely many candidates to win the man of the match. But the fans voted for the great Lionel Messi. It surely would have been a close contest between him and Mbappe, the two great performers in the final. Messi opened the scoring with a penalty early in the first half. He later scored his seventh goal of the tournament in extra time with a neat finish from close range.
