The footballing world held its breath for over 90 minutes as Tunisia recorded an unlikely yet famous 1-0 victory over France in the last Group D match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Skipper Wahbi Khazri, who had a fantastic game, scored the winner in what was a match rife with drama. Unfortunately for the African nation, they will still fall short of qualifying to the round of 16 as second place in the group was taken by Australia. Nonetheless, the victory over a footballing heavyweight like France will be a massive matter of pride for Tunisia who exit the world cup with their heads held high.

Absolute thriller

The match itself was a nail-biting affair as both teams gave it their all. Towards the end of the match, the Tunisian players had completely run out of fuel with some of them being unable to run at the French defense on a counter. France had the bulk of the possession with 66% and they had 10 shots on goal, twice as much as their opponent. However, they were toothless in the final third and that will be a point of concern for Didier Deschamps although he did play his second team.

Wahbi Khazri scored the lone goal of the match in the 58th minute after a fantastic run and miscommunication among the French defenders and goalkeeper Mandanda helped him on. The Tunisians did have one in the back of the net in the first half but it was ruled out for a tight offside. In stoppage time, substitute Antoine Griezmann did find the back of the net but was ruled out by the referee in controversial fashion after a VAR check. Here is how Twitter reacted to Tunisia’s inspirational victory over the defending champions.
