Germany was eliminated from the World Cup group stage for the second time in a row, despite a thrilling 4-2 win over Costa Rica on another night of high drama in Qatar. After earning just one point in their first two Group E games, Germany knew that only a victory at Al Bayt Stadium would give them a chance to advance to the knockout stage. Despite getting the result they needed, Japan’s 2-1 win over Spain meant Hansi Flick’s team exited the tournament on goal difference.

Serge Gnabry’s early header (10) appeared to have put Germany on track for a comfortable three points, but second-half goals from Yeltsin Tejeda (58) and Juan Pablo Vargas (70) put Costa Rica in pole position to qualify for the last 16 and raised the incredible possibility that both Germany and Spain would be eliminated. However, the drama did not end there. Germany substitute Kai Havertz scored a well-taken double (73 & 85) before fellow substitute Niclas Fullkrug made it 4-2 in the 89th minute. The victory, however, was insufficient for the four-time world champions, who finished third in Group E.

Fullkrug then survived a VAR check to score his team’s fourth goal before 10 minutes of stoppage time, with Germany hoping Spain can salvage a late equaliser against Japan, allowing them to advance. On a terrible night for one of the world’s great football superpowers, Japan held on to seal a stunning win against Spain and send Germany out of the World Cup – four years after they fell at the first hurdle as defending champions in Russia.
