England overcame a shaky start to defeat Senegal 3-0 and go to the World Cup quarterfinals in 2022. The result sets up a tantalising clash between Gareth Southgate’s team and France, who defeated Poland 3-1 earlier in the day, in the first-ever World Cup knockout stage meeting between the two European giants. Southgate complimented his team’s “amazing” ruthlessness after the game. Every game you play presents a new challenge and a new tactical issue to solve. We took the initiative to respond to those queries.

It’s quite difficult. “No knockout game is ever easy,” Kane was named Man of the Match. “Throughout the competition, we’ve shown amazing maturity, winning 3-0 tonight against a really tough squad.” Mentality was critical from the start, and we took advantage of opportunities as they presented themselves.” We are confident, have talented players on the way up, and a strong back line. A truly magical day for us.”

Henderson soothed England’s worries in the 38th minute by stroking the ball home after Jude Bellingham had played him in at the end of a brilliant passing sequence. Kane’s powerful shot past Edouard Mendy with the final ball of the first half moved him one goal behind Wayne Rooney’s England record of 53 goals. Senegal manager Aliou Cisse made a few substitutions at halftime, but they had little effect as England went up three goals in the 57th minute on a skillful touch from Bukayo Saka on Phil Foden’s cross through the 6-yard box over Mendy’s outstretched arms.

The win brought England’s overall unbeaten streak against African teams to 21, including eight World Cup appearances. The only remaining African team in the competition is Morocco, which takes on Spain on Tuesday.
