Argentina and Lionel Messi defeated Poland 2-0 on Wednesday to win Group C and advance to the World Cup’s last 16 at Stadium 974 in Qatar. Argentina, who were stunned by Saudi Arabia in their group opener, kept their quest for their first World Cup victory since 1986 alive with goals from Alex MacAllister and Julian Alvarez in the second half. Despite being outplayed for the whole 90 minutes, Poland advanced to the last phase with a better goal difference than Mexico and will meet Group D winners France on Sunday.

Argentina will face Australia in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Messi was playing in his 22nd World Cup game, as well as his 999th for club and country, breaking a tie with Diego Maradona for the most by an Argentine in the world’s greatest championship. Argentina dominated the first 45 minutes but had little to show for it, with a 0-0 result at halftime. Wojciech Szczesny of Poland saved a Messi penalty awarded by VAR.

Alvarez, a Manchester City teenager, made his international debut midway through the second half, receiving a pass from Enzo Fernandez in the penalty area and lashing a shot past Szczesny to all but seal the three points. Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz had instructed his players to avoid unnecessary bookings as the match progressed, as Poland’s place in the round of 16 could be decided by a fair play (yellow and red card accumulation) tiebreaker with Mexico.
