Being a consecration, the spiritual overtones were entirely fitting. In addition to following in the footsteps of Argentine football’s national hero Diego Maradona by leading his team to victory at the World Cup, Lionel Messi also filled in a glaring hole in his resume by winning the one award that had eluded him – at the fifth and, likely, last attempt. In the process, he enhanced his claim to the title of greatest player of all time. After the most miraculous of Kylian Mbappé-inspired France rallies, which saw the reigning champions fight back from the brink twice.

Messi fell to his knees in the centre circle and was surrounded by his teammates. Gonzalo Montiel had converted the game-winning penalty. It will go down in history as a timeless masterpiece, conceivably the best World Cup final ever, and one of the greatest games ever played. It was Messi’s game in so many ways, and regardless of how France fought, it was going to be his game in the end.

The game successfully addressed these narrative stakes. Numerous people may have predicted that Messi would eventually miss after Mbappe handed France the advantage in the shootout. However, it was not going to be tragic. It was a story that was meant to have everything else in its place. Nevertheless, Argentina scored on each of its final three penalties, with Montiel’s goal clinching the 2022 World Cup for his country. For France, Kinsgley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni both failed to convert their penalty kicks. Messi has completed the game. He has finally completed his career. This is the most important victory, even if he has won everything. Messi is all alone. The sky is most likely the only thing above the albiceleste.
