Feyenoord and NEC Nijmegan delivered a crazy rollercoaster ride in the KNVB Cup last-16 fixture at De Kuip on Friday night. Both sides scored four goals each in 120 minutes of play, before Feyenoord prevailed 5-3 in the tie breaker. First-half strikes from Calvin Verdonk and Pedro Marques gave a 2-0 lead to NEC, before De Kuip netted twice the stoppage-time through Orkun Kokcu and Igor Oaixao and took the game to extra-time. NEC and Feyenoord both found the back of the net twice and it went to spot-kick. Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther denied Ilias Bronkhorst from the penalty spot, while all five of De Kuip’s penalty takers scored from the 12 yards to secure a thrilling win and progress to the quarter-finals of the competition. It was an all-time KMVB classic in Rotterdam as both sides recorded a combined total of 63 shots, with Feyenoord attempting 50 of those.

NEC took a 2-0 lead in the first-half

NEC drew the first blood three minutes into the half-hour mark, when left-back Verdonk made a nice little overlapping run to get on the end of a perfectly weighted through ball from Oussama Tannae and slotted home past Wellenreuther, into the back of the net. The visitors doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, courtesy of Marques’ effort from inside the box. Just when it looked like NEC were on their way to secure a famous win over the Eredivisie leaders, defender Philipe Sandler used his hand to deny Ezequiel Bullaude from eight yards and the referee pointed to the spot.

Stoppage-time efforts from Orkun Kokcu and Igor Oaixao forced game into extra time

The substitute defender was handed a straight red card , while Kokcu converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit in the 90th-minute. And then, less than two minutes later, Oaixao headed home from inside the box to make the score 2-2. Feyenoord could have scored a late winner but Bullaude’s 94th-minute strike from close range was brilliantly kept out by the visiting goalkeeper. The extra time offered no less drama and excitement as Santiago Gimenez canceled out Jordy Brujin’s 96th-minute effort, before Jabairo Dilrosun’s stunning strike from outside the box in the 116th-minute put Feyenoord ahead for the first time in the match. But NEC were not willing to give up and leveled the score at 4-4 through Brujin’s second of the night, two minutes from time. And the match went to penalties where De Kuip came out on top to enter the last-8 of the competition.
