The hosts are heading into the tie on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Orlando City on Saturday, while New York City suffered a 2-1 defeat to Philadelphia last Thursday. Despite the loss, New York City sit at the second spot in the Eastern Conference with 27 points, just two behind leaders Philadelphia, while the hosts occupy seventh place, having pocketed 23 points from 16 outings.

Cincinnati got the better of Orlando City courtesy of a Brenner’s lone strike in the 68th minute. It was the home side’s seventh victory of the season. Prior to that, the Orange and Blue earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the leaders Philadelphia after Brandon Vazquez had canceled out Alejandro Bedoya’s opener. Pat Noonan’s side have won two and lost two in their last five games. They will be aiming to register back-to-back league wins for the first time since the first week of May when they host NYCFC on Thursday.
New York City, on the other hand, lost to Philadelphia last weekend. Mikael Uhre opened the scoring for the U before New York City netted a late equaliser through Valentin Castellanos, one minute from time. Just when it looked like the top of the table clash would end in a draw, Cory Burke scored the winner in the sixth minute of injury time. It was New York City’s first league defeat since the beginning of April.

Cincinnati defender Ronald Matarrita is sidelined with an ankle injury, while goalkeeper Alex Kann and midfielder Calvin Harris are out with respective leg and abdominal issues. Noonan is likely to stick with the same starting eleven that got the job done against Orlando City. Brenner and Vazquez would form the attacking-duo with Acosta occupying the space behind them. As for NYCFC, their only injury concern is forward Kevin O’Toole, who is out with a head issue. Castellanos, who has eight scalps to his name, is expected to lead the attack.
