Chelsea thrashed Chesterfield 5-1 in the FA Cup fixture at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and Hakim Ziyech got on the scoresheet as the Blues went through to the next round. Akwasi Asante scored a late consolation goal for Chesterfield . Elsewhere, Newcastle suffered a shock loss against Cambridge United courtesy of a lone goal from Joe Ironside. Keiran Trippier who joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid made his debut for the Magpies.

Werner opened the scoring for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the 6th minute. Mateo Kovacic laid the ball to Ziyech on the right side of the penalty area after a marauding run from the midfield. The Morocco winger’s half-shaved cross fell to Werner in front of goal and the German striker slotted home into an open goal to take the lead.

Few minutes later, Ziyech tested Chesterfield goalkeeper Scott Loach. In the 18th minute Hudson-Odoi doubled Chelsea’s lead with a brilliant strike from outside the box. The 21-year-old wing-back cut inside from the left and unleashed a beautiful right-foot curler that ended up at the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, Lukaku tapped in Hall’s cross from the left to make the score 3-0. On the half-hour-mark, Lukaku’s effort from Werner’s cross went just wide of goal. Six minutes before the break, Hall’s shot from outside the box was saved by Loach but the rebound was headed home by Christensen to push Chelsea’s half-time lead to 4-0.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek replaced Kovacic at the break, with Havertz coming on for Lukaku. Christensen  took the arm captain’s armband after Kovacic’s withdrawal. Ziyech went past three Chesterfield players before being denied by Loach. The 28year-old made no mistake from the spot, however, firing home a penalty for Chelsea’s fifth of the night. Pulisic earned the penalty after being fouled by Calvin Miller inside the box.

Chelsea couldn’t keep a clean sheet as Asante tapped in after Kabongo Tshimanga had driven in on goal with chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli parrying his shot.

Newcastle 0-1 Cambridge United

Cambridge heaped further misery on Eddie Howe’s relegation-threatened Newcastle St. James’ Park. Ironside made the most of some below par defending to score the game’s only goal in the 56th minute. First Martin Dubravka and then Fabian Schar failed to deal with a ball into the box and Cambidge forward Ironside pounced to put the visitors ahead.

Newcastle tried hard to get the equalizer, they had the bulk share of ball possession but did very little with it. Cambridge goalkeeper Mitov made a late save to deny Joelinton’s header to secure a surprise win for Cambridge.
