Everton will host Chelsea in their 2022-23 Premier League opener at the Goodison Park on Saturday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv last Saturday, while Chelsea got the better of Udinese 3-1 in their final friendly of the summer on the same day. Everton didn’t have a great league campaign last term, finishing 16th in the table, just four points clear of the relegation zone, while the Blues managed to secure third spot, 19 points adrift of the champions Manchester City.

The Toffees had a disastrous start to their pre-season, losing to Arsenal (2-0) and Minnesota (4-0) before getting their acts together to register victories against Blackpool (4-2) and Dynamo Kyiv. In their recent outing against the Ukrainian outfit, Dominic Calvert Lewin opened the scoring before Dwight McNeil netted a brace to secure the win for Frank Lampard’s side. Meanwhile Everton managed to sign just three players this summer, bringing in defender James Tarkowski, attacker McNeil and left-back Rubber Vinagre.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have lost the services of two key central defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, as both of them have left the club to join Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. However, the Blues have managed to sign Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina. In their last game against the Italian outfit, Goals from N’Golo Kante, Sterling and Mason Mount helped them secure their second win of the pre-season, while the remaining three friendlies ended in defeats.
