Amid the celebration of Italy winning Euro 2020, manager Roberto Mancini found redemption of hiw own. The Italian was part of a great side in the late 90s that failed to win anything internationally. However, he has now led another great Italian side not only to glory, but through a dark period too. It’s been noted ad nausem that Italy didn’t even qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. But to go from there to Euro winners in the span of three years is nothing short of amazing. Speaking after the game, Mancini said he was due this win with the national team.

“I was very fortunate to play in a great side in 1990 and a terrific under-21 team in 1988. Despite the fact we were the best team, we didn’t win it and lost both times on penalties.”

In fact, such was the magnitude of the win that Mancini was moved to tears. He said afterwards that his tears were for the whole of Italy, to whom he dedicated this win.

“It was the emotion which happens after achieving something incredible. It was the emotion of seeing the guys celebrate and the fans in the stands,” he said.

“Seeing everything we have managed to create, all of the hard work we have put in over the last three years, but specifically the last 50 days which have been very hard.

“It’s the fact we have been able to forge this team spirit over the last 50 days, they have really created something which can never be separated going forward. They will always be synonymous with this triumph.”

Roberto Mancini praises Italy’s ‘dominance’

“We did well. We conceded a goal straight away and struggled, but then we dominated the game,” Mancini told RAI Sport following the 3-2 win on penalties after the match ended 1-1 after extra time.

“The lads were wonderful, I don’t know what more to say. It’s important for all the people and all the fans. I hope they’re celebrating (in Italy).”

Leonardo Bonucci, who has been so key to Italy’s defence through the tournament, dubbed their win ‘incredible’. “It’s incredible, when I think back to where we started,” said 34-year-old defender Bonucci.

Italy are now on a 34-match unbeaten run, bouncing back in style after suffering the humiliation of failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“When you are at the bottom of the hole, you see how great men regain their strength,” Bonucci added. “I want to say thank you to our great coach, our great team, our great country. We are full of joy and happiness.”

Captain Giorgio Chiellini said “there was something magical in the air” since the tournament kicked off in Rome a month ago.

“A few tears fell. We all deserved it, at this age we realise even more what it means to win such a trophy,” said the 36-year-old.

“We have been saying that something magical is in the air since the end of May, day after day.”
