Real Sociedad will be bidding to bounce back from their shock defeat to Rayo Valladolid when they travel to Cornella for their La Liga fixture against Espanyol on Monday. The previous meeting between these two sides was less than five months ago, which ended 2-1 in favour of Real Sociedad, thanks to first-half efforts from Alexander Sorloth and Brais Mendez. The visitors are heading into the match on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Real Valladolid last Sunday, while Espanyol played out a 1-1 draw against Osasuna, a day earlier.

Espanyol are languishing at the 17th spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 21 points from 20 games, just one clear of the relegation zone. Last time out, the Parakeets came from behind to earn a point at home to Osasuna, courtesy of Martin Braithwaite’s 59th-minute effort, which canceled out Ante Budimir’s opener. It was their ninth league-draw of the season. Meanwhile, the Catalan outfit have recorded just four top flight wins this term, and their last win came against top-four challengers Real Betis on January 21. Once again, it was Braithwaite who scored the lone goal of the match.

Real Sociedad, on the other hand, are winless in their last three outings across all competitions. Their last triumph was against Rayo Vallecano on January 21, thanks to first-half strikes from Alexander Sorloth and Ander Barrenetxea at Estadio de Vallecas. It was their 12th La Liga-win of the season, only behind Real Madrid (14) and Barcelona (17). After that, La Real lost to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey before playing out a 0-0 draw away to Real Madrid in the league and then lost to Valladolid, last time out. Cyle Larin’s 73rd-minute strike was enough to hand Real Sociedad their fifth league-defeat of the campaign last Sunday. Despite the loss, the White and Blues are sitting at the third spot in La Liga Santander, with 39 points to their name.
Real Sociedad have won five of the last six encounters against Espanyol. Meanwhile Monday’s fixture will be the 151st meeting between these two sides, and Real Sociedad have a clear upper hand in the head-to-head record, with 62 wins to their name.
