Another fine win for Chelsea saw them beat 10-man Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. This win now puts them on top of the table for now, with Liverpool and Manchester City playing each other on Sunday. Another fine outing for Chalobah, who adds another goal to his collection and got the Blues off the mark. Both Lukaku and Werner were unlucky to see goals ruled offside, before the German slotted home to restore the lead after James Ward-Prowse slotted a penalty. However, the Saints captain was later sent off for a reckless challenge on Jorginho, before Chelsea went on to see out the win with a cherry on the cake provided by Ben Chilwell.

VAR intervened in first half

The first half was quite an interesting one. The Chelsea players and fans were livid that the lead had not been doubled. Local lad Trevoh Chalobah’s diving header made the difference at half time, Ben Chilwell’s corner was flicked on by Loftus-Cheek and Chalobah was there at the back post to nod home from close range and add to his Blues account. However, both Romelu Lukaku and then Timo Werner had their efforts in the back of the net ruled out for offside. Southampton had shown brief spells of promise, though they could generate the finish, at half time they remained searching for a foothold. Southampton skipper James Ward-Prowse was the only player to really go close for the visitors. Both teams had all to play for in the second half.

Ward-Prowse hero to villain in 20 minutes

As the second half got underway, both teams went at it from the whistle. Southampton were rewarded for their bravery in the 59th minute, Chilwell slid to try and stop Livramento but he missed the ball and took the right back’s legs and the referee showed no hesitation whatsoever to point at the penalty spot. Skipper Ward-Prowse stepped and confidently fired it into the bottom right corner to level the score. However, a VAR intervention in the 77th minute caught Ward-Prowse put in a late tackle on Jorginho which resulted in a red card for the Saints skipper and they were down to 10 men for the last 15minutes of the game. Chelsea kept mounting pressure on the Saints defence.

After his goal was disallowed in the first half, Timo Werner got his goal in the 84th minute to put Chelsea ahead. It was a wonderful cross-field pass from Ross Barkley to Azpilicueta who controlled it neatly and rolled it across the six-yard box, where Werner was there to tap home from close range and send the Bridge wild. The icing on the cake was done by Chilwell, who conceded the penalty, it was a chaotic goal, first Lukaku fired a shot on goal from close range which bounced back off the post and then Azpilicueta’s shot hit the crossbar before eventually falling to the feet of Chilwell who slotted home the third goal of the match and sealed the three points for the blues in the 89th minute.

Next up for Chelsea is a trip to Brentford after the International break, while Southampton are still looking for their first win of the season and they face Leeds United in their next game.
