Chelsea were in seventh heaven on Saturday as they trounced Norwich 7-0 at Stamford Bridge in the English Premier League (EPL). The Blues were without their star striker Romelu Lukaku on the day and it seemed like the entire team decided to take on the goal-scoring role. Midfielder Mason Mount was the shining star on the day as he scored a fantastic hat-trick. Two of his three goals came after the 80-minute mark. Among the other goal scorers for the Blues were Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, and Ben Chilwell. The win took the Blues to the top of the league table. It was a performance that laid down the statement that Thomas Tuchel was here to win the Premier League this season.

A GOAL-SCORING FESTIVAL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

Mount only took eight minutes to smash in the first goal of the match. A wayward clearance by Norwich saw Italian footballer Jorginho pick the ball up for the Blues. He teed up Mount who smashed the ball past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul to make it 1-0 to the Blues.

Hudson-Odoi netted the Blues’ second just 10 minutes later. Matteo Kovacic played a peach of a pass that cut through the Norwich defence to find Hudson-Odoi. The attacker ran onto the ball and calmly side-footed it past Krul to double the lead for the home team.

A few minutes before half time, wing-back Reece James netted Chelsea’s third goal. It came in the 42nd minute when Mount played an inch-perfect through ball forward for the defender to run on to. James composed himself and converted a fine finish that saw him dink the ball over an advancing Krul.

There was absolutely no pressure on Chelsea heading into the second half and perhaps that was why they could play their natural game with the utmost perfection. The Blues netted their fourth goal in the 57th minute when Kovacic set up Ben Chilwell, who made no mistake in smashing it past the Norwich keeper.

It really was a horrible day for Norwich as they conceded a fifth goal just five minutes later. This time, however, it was an own goal by Max Aarons. A Hudson-Odoi cross hit the Norwich defender in the penalty area, leaving Krul helpless as he saw the ball end up in the back of the net. Chelsea were 5-0 up by 62 minutes.

BAD TO WORSE FOR THE CANARIES

Things were about to go from bad to worse for the visitors, however. Defender Ben Gibson, who was already booked, was penalised for a poor tackle on James. The referee produced the second yellow, and eventually the red card, reducing Norwich to 10 men for the rest of the match.

MOUNT COMPLETES LATE HAT-TRICK

Chelsea were awarded a penalty by VAR as Norwich midfielder Mathias Normann had handled the ball in the penalty area from an Antonio Rudiger cross. Mount failed to convert the penalty initially but the referee ordered it to be retaken as Krul was off his line. The England midfielder made no mistake this time around and made it 6-0 to Chelsea.

He completed his hat-trick in added time when Ruben Loftus-Cheek cut back and played him a pass, setting him up to shoot at an open net in the 91st minute of the match. It was the perfect day for the England international and his club.
