Eibar will host Basque rivals Alaves in the first leg of their Segunda Division semi-final playoff tie at Muncipal de Ipurua on Saturday evening. The hosts qualified for the playoffs courtesy of securing a fifth-place finish in the Spanish second tier standings, having collected 71 points from 42 games, level on points with fourth-placed Alaves, who have a better goal-difference. Meanwhile, Eibar are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win away to Huesca on the final day of the league campaign, while the visitors played out a goalless draw against Las Palmas.

Eibar secured their 19th second tier victory of the season against Huesca last weekend thanks to Matheus Perreira’s lone goal eight minutes from time. The result helped Los Armeros to end their nine-game winless run in the Segunda Division, recording three defeats in the period. Despite the poor end to their regular season, the Gunsmiths earned top six finish thanks to five successive victories across February and March. Eibar spent seven straight seasons in the La Liga before getting relegated in 2020-21 and they secured a third-place finish in the Segunda Divsion last season, but couldn’t get the better of Girona in the playoffs thereby failed make an immediate return to the top flight.
Alaves, on the other hand, suffered only one defeat from their final ten second tier games, while winning four matches in the period. The Blue and Whites’ have registered three draws and one win from their last four outings. Their last success came against Malaga thanks to goals from Asier Villalibre and Toni Moya either side of Luis Munoz’s equaliser. The Glorious One managed to keep five clean sheets from their last ten games, while they also boast the fourth-best defensive record in the second tier having conceded only 33 goals. The visitors saw a six-year stay in La Liga end last season when they were relegated in the 20th position, so the club are looking to bounce back to the top level at the first time of asking.
