Edinson Cavani's brace helps Manchester United thrash Roma 6-2 in UEFA Europa League

Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes scored two goals each, Paul Pogba scored a goal and Mason Greenwood put the icing on the cake with the sixth goal for Manchester United as they thrashed Roma 6-2 in the UEFA Europa League clash.

Manchester United thrashed injury-hit Roma side 6-2 in the UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes scored two goals each. Paul Pogba had an excellent outing in the middle of the park and scored the fifth goal for United. Substitute Mason Greenwood put the icing on the cake with the sixth United goal in the later stages of the UEFA Europa League match which they dominated. Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini and striker Edin Dzeko got on the score sheet for Roma in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 9th minute. Paul Pogba got past three Roma players to give the ball to Cavani. The Uruguayan’s one-touch pass found Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese international chipped the ball over the Roma goalkeeper Paul Lopez to make it 1-0 for United.

Few minutes later, Paul Pogba handled the ball inside the penalty box and the referee pointed to the spot. After some discussion’s with the lines man and the VAR check, the penalty decision wasn’t overturned and Pellegrini stepped up and converted the spot kick to level the score for Roma in the 15th minute.

Roma take lead in uefa europa league clash

Roma got the lead through Edin Dzeko in the 33rd minute. Former Man United player Mkhitaryan’s through ball found Pellegrini inside the box, who gave a sliding pass to Edin Dzeko in front of the goal to make it 2-1 for Roma.

Roma made three changes in the first half due to injuries. And that seemed to have affected them. Three minutes after restart Cavani and Fernandes combined to make it 2-2. Fernandes set it up for Cavani to brilliantly strike the ball into the top corner past substitute Roma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Manchester United dominate second half

In the second half, Manchester United dominated. From the 64th minute, The Red Devils scored four goals in the space of 22 minutes. Mirante parried a low cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka into the path of Cavani. The 34-year old striker scored his second goal of the night.

Bruno Fernandes scored his second goal of the night in the 71st minute through the second penalty of the night. Chris Smalling fouled Cavani from behind, inside the penalty box and the referee pointed to the spot. Fernandes converted the spot kick to make it 4-2 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Paul Pogba scored the fifth goal for United on the night. Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly weighted cross was headed in by the Frenchman. Substitute Mason Greenwood made it 6-2 for United in the 86th minute. Cavani’s excellent pass found Greenwood in acres of space. The Englishman ran with the ball to the Roma goal and fired it past Mirante.

Manchester United head into the second leg at the Stadio Olympico on May 7th with a four-goal cushion. Paulo Fonseca’s side is left with a mountain to climb in the reverse fixture.
