Game Plan

Ecuador have been brilliant in their opening two games. After having comfortably beaten Qatar, La Tri played out a thrilling draw against the Dutch. The South American outfit were clearly the better side against Holland on Friday but couldn’t find the winner. Meanwhile, striker Enner Valencia who has scored all three of Ecuador’s goals in the tournament thus far, sustained a knee injury against Holland, but media reports have claimed that the 33-year-old will be fit for the game against Senegal. Head coach Gustavo Alfaro is likely to opt for a 4-4-2 formation, withe Valencia and Michael Estrada forming the attacking-duo. Pervis Estupinan, who had an impressive outing against the Dutch would continue on the left flank, with Eduar Ayrton at the opposite end. Moises Caicedo and Edison Mendez will form the midfield-duo. La Tri plays a very simple and direct brand of football with a solid defence that has kept four clean sheets in their last five games. Alfaro’s side are very compact while defending and rely on collective effort during attacks.

Senegal, on the other hand, have some world class players in their squad and they have a good account of themselves in their first two games. The Lions of Teranga were unlucky to end up on the losing side against Netherlands but then came out all guns blazing to secure all three points against the hosts in the next outing. Aliou cisse’s side netted three times against The Maroons courtesy of strikes from Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Baba Dieng. The 46-year-old tactician is likely to continue  with a 4-4-2 formation that got the job done in the last match. Wingers’s Ismail Sarr and Krepin Diatta are likely to be the key players for the Lions of Teranaga with Famara Diedhiou and Dia partnering up front.

Possible formations and Lineups

Valencia’s knee problem is the only injury concern for Alfaro, while the rest of the squad is fit and ready to go. Galindez will continue in goal, with Piero Hincapie, Felix Torres, Estupinan and Preciado forming the back-four. As for Senegal, midfielder Kouyate is sidelined with an injury, therefore Idrissa Gueye and Nampalys Mendy are likely to continue in the engine room.

Ecuador possible starting lineup (4-4-2): Galindez, Preciado, Torres, Hincapie, Estupinan, Plata, Caicedo, Mendez, Ibara, Valencia, Estrada

Senegal possible starting lineup (4-4-2): Mendy, Sabaly, Koulibaly, Diallo, Jakobs, Sarr, Mendy, Gueye, Diatta, Dia, Diedhiou
