Dynamo Kyiv will host Benfica in the first leg of the Champions League playoff round clash at the Stadion LKS on Wednesday night. The visitors are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Casa Pia in a Primeira Liga fixture last weekend. Meanwhile, for the hosts, Champions League matches are the only competitive action they are participating in, since football in Ukraine has come to a halt since December, because of war against Russia. Dynamo Kyiv’ last game was against SK Sturm Graz on August 10, in the previous round of the qualifiers.

The Blue and whites secured a 3-1 aggregate win over the Austrian outfit to get this far in the qualifiers. The first leg of the Champions League third round qualifying ended 1-0 in favour of Dynamo Kyiv. And then, in the second leg, the Ukrainian outfit secured a 2-1 victory to seal the tie. K Vivcharenko and Viktor Tsyhankov netted for the Blue and whites at the Merkur Arena. Prior to that, in the second round, Mircea Lucescu’s side got the better of Fenerbahce 2-1 over two legs.
Benfica, on the other hand, earned a spot in the third round of Champions League qualification courtesy of finishing at the third spot in the 2021-22 Primeira Liga. The Portuguese outfit thrashed Midtjylland 7-2 over two legs to book a meeting with the Blue and Whites. Roger Schmidt’s side won the first leg of the previous round tie 3-1. And then, in the away leg, Enzo Fernandez, Henrique Araujo and Diogo goncalves netted for the Eagles to seal the victory. Meanwhile, in their recent outing against Casa Pia in their domestic league fixture, Goncalo Ramos’ lone strike was enough to separate the two sides and earn three points for Benfica.
Dynamo Kyiv’s midfield duo of Denys Garmash and Sergiy Sydorcuk are unavailable for Wednesday’s game because of suspension. Meanwhile, defender Volodymyr Kostevych is sidelined with an injury. Buyalskyi, Tsygankov and Besedin are expected to form the attacking trio. As for Benfica, Brazilian defender Lucas Verissimo is sidelined with a serious knee injury. Argentina international Nicolas Otamendi is likely to marshal the back-four alongside F Morato. Last game’s goal-scorer Ramos could partner Silva up front.

Benfica probable starting lineup: Vlachodimas; Gilberto, Otamendi, F Morato, Grimaldo, Chiquinho, Fernandez, Luis, Goncalves, Ramos, Silva
