Corinthians will take on Santos in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil Round of 16 clash at Corinthians Arena on Wednesday. The hosts are heading into the tie on the back of a convincing 1-0 win over Golas in their domestic league fixture last time out while Santos were held to a 2-2 draw by Bragantino in their previous match. After a shock defeat in the third round a season ago to Atletico Goianiense, 2-0 on aggregate, Corinthians are back in the last-16 aiming to go all the way and replicate their league success in the cup competition.

Corinthians are in superb form in the domestic league, having won seven of their 13 games so far to sit at the second spot in the standings, with 25 points, just three behind leaders Palmeiras. However, Vito Pereira’s side had to dig deep to get the better of Serie D side Portuguesa RJ in the third round of the domestic cup competition. After being held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Timao scored two goals in the first half of the second leg to secure a 2-1 aggregate win and advance to this point. Corinthians have been brilliant at home, not losing their last 15 games, while collecting 10 clean sheets in that period. Pereira’s side has been solid at the back, having conceded the second-fewest goals in Serie A so far.Â
Santos, on the other hand, are languishing at the 8th spot in the domestic league and are still trying to find a winning formula. Fabian Bustos’ side has won just one of their last five games, while four of them ended in draws. In the last match against Bragantino, Leo Baptistao netted a first-half brace to give a healthy lead to Santos, but the visitors came out stronger in the second half and leveled the score courtesy of strikes from Hyoran Dalmoro and Luan Candido. As of now, Corinthians are favourites to come out on top and Santos might have to produce their best performance of the month to get the better of the People’s team.

Corinthians boss Vito Pereira has injury problems to address as Roni missed last game on Sunday because of injury, while Junior Moraes is out with illness, Maycon is nursing muscle problem, Joao Victor is sidelined with a sprained ankle, Luan is dealing with hip injury, Paulinho and Ruan are long-term absentees because of ACL tear. As for Santos, Maicon is out until July with a thigh problem, Madson has a muscle issue and Kevin Malthus continues to nurse an ACL injury.

The Copa do Brasil encounter between Corinthians and Santos will take place at Corinthians Arena and it will kickoff at 6:00 am IST on June 23, Thursday.
The Copa do Brasil started on the 22nd of February and will continue till the 19th of October and it will see 92 teams participating in it. The matches are reportedly shown on Rede Globo, SporTV, Premiere and Amazon Prime Video.
