Defending champions Juventus thrashed Sampdoria 4-1 in Turin to go through to the quarter-finals of Coppa Italia on Tuesday. Juan Cuadrado opened the scoring for Massimiliano Allegri’s side in the first half before Daniele Rugani doubled the lead after the break. Although Andrea Conti pulled on back for Sampdoria, Paulo Dybala restored the two goal cushion and then Alvaro Morata made the score 4-1 from the penalty spot. Juve will face either Sassuolo or Cagliari in the next round in early February.

Sampdoria came into the match without a manager as Roberto D’Aversa was sacked yesterday and therefore played under youth team boss Felice Tufano and director Angelo Palumbo instead. Meanwhile Juve took full advantage of a manager-less Sampdoria and straight away went on the attack. Captain Juan Cuadrado and Mattia De Sciglio tested Sampdoria goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.

Juve took the lead in the 25th minute. Cuadrado’s low free-kick from the edge of the box went through the wall and took a slight deflection before going past Falcone and into the bottom corner. Few moments later, Morata put the ball inside the net and Juve thought they had extended the lead, but VAR intervened and the goal was disallowed as Adrien Rabiot had committed a foul during the build-up.

Falcone was having a busy night as he made a quick reflex save to deny Daniele Rugani from close range. And then, on the stroke of half-time, the Italian goalkeeper quickly came off his line to prevent a cross from reaching Morata in front of goal.

The Bianconeri doubled the lead in the 52nd minute. A corner from the right flank was taken short, Arthur whipped in a cross for Rugani to head home from seven yards out into the far bottom corner.. However, the visitors reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute. Tommaso Augello’s low cross from the left flank found its way across the goal to Conti, who took one touch before unleashing a powerful half-volley that bounced in off the inside of the far post.

Four minutes later, Juve scored their third of the night courtesy of a mistake from Sampdoria. The visitors tried to play out from the back and were dispossessed by Manuel Locatelli and the ball fell nicely for substitute Dybala to slot home from inside the box.

Nathan Ake came off the bench and earned a penalty as he was fouled by Augello. Morata stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick, 13 minutes from time. Rabiot came close too, as his attempt hit the post from a tight angle while Dybala tested Falcone couple of times.
