The Danish National Team has called back Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen for the first time after last year’s incident during the Euro 2020, when he collapsed on the field and suffered a cardiac arrest. Coach Kasper Hjulmand has decided to include Eriksen in the twenty-three players selected to play friendly matches against the Netherland and Serbia later this month. The former Inter Milan midfielder joined Brentford last January on a six-months deal until the end of the current season.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN BACK ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE

Eriksen couldn’t continue to play in Serie A due to the Italian league’s rules about medical devices. Eriksen’s need for a pacemaker meant he’d be unable to take the field for his club side, Inter Milan, as the devices are not permitted. In December Inter Milan and Eriksen parted company officially, six months after the incident he suffered during the match against Finland on June 12. The Danish midfielder then decided to come back to the Premier League, where there are no such restrictions. Eriksen last played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur during the 2019-20 season before leaving, ending an eight year stint that saw him appear 226 times for the North London club.

After moving to Inter he was a regular, though not always a starter, for Antonio Conte, appearing 43 times over a season and a half. At Brentford Eriksen has played three matches since he joined the club, providing one assist in the team’s victory last match against Burnley. His goal is to be part of the National Team’s list for the Qatar World Cup later this year and this first call is definitely another step towards reaching something that only few weeks ago seemed to be an impossible dream.
